If you have been putting off booking your IELTS test, this is the update that should move it up your priority list. Two significant changes have happened to IELTS in India in 2026 — one already in effect, one arriving in weeks — and if you are preparing without knowing about either, you may be caught off guard on test day or on your bank statement.
What Has Actually Changed?
Two things have shifted, and they are worth understanding separately.
The fee went up
From April 1, 2026, the IELTS exam fee in India increased from Rs 18,000 to Rs 19,000. This applies to both Academic and General Training formats, and is uniform across all cities and test centres in India. The IELTS for UKVI version has increased to Rs 19,250. The One Skill Retake option has also been updated to Rs 12,650. The increase itself is modest, but for candidates who need multiple attempts or whose spouse is also applying, the cost compounds quickly.
Paper-based testing is ending
IDP Education has announced that IELTS in India will shift completely to a computer-based format from September 2026. Paper-based IELTS will remain available only until August 2026, with the last three paper-based exam dates scheduled on July 25, August 6, and August 22. After August 22, the paper option will not exist in India.
What the New Format Actually Means?
In the computer-delivered IELTS, the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections will be completed on a computer, while the Speaking test will continue to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner.
The exam content, band score, assessment criteria, and international recognition remain the same. The syllabus, question types, marking criteria, and exam duration are unchanged. Neither format is easier — both assess the same English language skills and follow identical assessment standards.
What does change in practice:
- You type your Writing responses rather than handwriting them – typing speed and comfort now matter
- The computer version includes an on-screen timer, a simpler interface for navigating between questions, and a digital interface that supports candidates during the test
- Computer-delivered IELTS gives you scores within 24 to 48 hours, while paper-based results are delivered on the 7th day after the test date, a meaningful difference if you are working to a tight application deadline

Does This Affect Germany-Bound Applicants?
Here is the honest clarification most guides skip: whether you are applying to universities in Germany, Canada, the UK, Australia, or other countries, your IELTS score will continue to be accepted globally. The format change does not affect recognition.
However, language requirements depend heavily on the specific Germany-specific visa route you choose. For the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), English proficiency at the B2 level is an officially accepted way to meet the basic language threshold, and IELTS is a recognized proof (with higher scores like C1 earning extra points). On the other hand, for the EU Blue Card or a standard qualified work visa, there is generally no statutory language requirement to secure initial entry. When German proficiency is needed—such as to fast-track permanent settlement, enter regulated professions, or apply to German-taught university programs—immigration authorities look for official German certificates like Goethe, TELC, or TestDaF rather than IELTS.
What to Do Right Now?
If you prefer the paper-based format and haven’t booked yet, move quickly. The last paper-based examinations in India will be conducted on July 25, August 6, and August 22, 2026. After these dates, all IELTS tests will be conducted exclusively through computers.
If you are planning to sit after August 22, shift your preparation to computer-based mock tests as soon as possible. Practise typing your Writing responses, get comfortable navigating questions on screen, and use the official IELTS computer-delivered practice material available through IDP.
If you are still deciding between IELTS and a German language route for your Germany move, that decision is worth getting right before you spend Rs 19,000 finding out the hard way.
